The first email was sent by Ray Tomlinson, a computer programmer, in 1971. Ray Tomlinson is credited with inventing email and developing the first networked email system. At the time, he was working on the ARPANET, a precursor to the modern internet, as a computer engineer for Bolt, Beranek, and Newman (BBN).
